A simple website check-up for small-business owners
You don't need to be technical to spot a website that's costing you customers. A handful of quick checks tell you whether your site is working as hard as you are — and most of them take minutes.
1. Does it load quickly on a phone?
Most of your customers are on a phone, and they'll leave a slow page in seconds. Test your own site on mobile data, not just wifi. Heavy images and too many scripts are the usual culprits.
2. Can you find it by searching your own name?
Search your business name. If you're not on the first page, or the wrong site comes up, search engines can't see you properly. This is the single fastest signal that something's wrong.
3. Does every page say what it's for?
Open your service pages. Does each one have a clear headline that names the service (and, for local businesses, the area)? 'Home' and 'Page 1' don't sell anything.
4. Is it easy to contact you?
Is your phone number or a contact form one obvious step away on every page? A visitor who can't find how to reach you in seconds leaves — and never comes back.
5–7. Titles, images and links
Check your browser-tab text on each page (is it descriptive?), whether images have meaningful descriptions (for accessibility and search), and whether any links lead to dead 'page not found' errors. These are exactly what an automated audit checks across your whole site in one go.
